IL DNR director: Expect even more cuts

OTTAWA — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources faces more budget cuts that continue a decade-worth of reduced spending in the agency, the director said Saturday.

Marc Miller said Gov. Pat Quinn’s proposed budget reduces DNR spending by 13.5 percent, which includes 9.4 percent less in general revenue. This comes on top of federal cuts, he said.

“We took a very sizeable cut in federal funds,” Miller said.

Miller, appearing at the La Salle County Democratic Central Committee annual fundraiser, spoke to the media before the Jackson Day dinner. He said cuts are a “responsible measure on our part for the (reduced) money coming in.”

In addition to suspending the magazine, Illinois Outdoors, this month the agency expects to cut programs at outdoors shows and fairs, stocking of private ponds and other “less critical programs,” Miller said. Parks will “absolutely not” be closed, he said.
