Alabama Rig catching on, but is it legal?

The Alabama Rig is a fish catching machine. The only confusion is its legality.

The A-rig features five lures on a wire spreader to simulate a school of bait, a freshwater version of the umbrella rig. Inventor Andy Poss has a patent pending on The Alabama Rig and is aligned with Mann’s Bait Co. for distribution. Paul Elias popularized it when he won the FLW Tour Open in October with it.

Since then, many versions have been made. I counted about eight at the Steelheaders’ Show in January at Michigan City. I am sure there will be many versions at the Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show, which opens today.

But there’s widespread confusion about its legality, even by law enforcement.

“Indiana’s fishing regulations do not specifically address legality of umbrella rigs and the smaller version known as an Alabama Rig,’’ emailed Phil Bloom, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
