Apparently Chicago Tribune writer Bargara Brotman was stunned to find out that Indiana has more than pavement and chemical factories in this piece that should be filed under ‘damning with faint praise’:

That’s right — the place you drive through on the way to Michigan. Actually, it is not generally known for its natural beauty, even to many natives. But northern Indiana has enough of it that the area’s current campaign promoting tourism is based on the outdoors.
“We had an outside expert come in and make an inventory of what sets us apart,” said Christine Livingston, assistant director of Indiana Dunes Tourism. “And what they came up with was that we have just an amazing number of natural assets.
“Northern Indiana marks the southernmost spot some cold-loving plants survive, and the northernmost home for some warm-weather species. “Everything meets here,” Livingston said.
